Inspired by Hussac jacket braiding that was popularised in the 18th century in Scottish Highlandwear kilt doublets.

The vest explores masculinity, identity, gender and queerness, questioning the idea that masculinity is something fixed or defined by the physical body. Taking the silhouette of a traditional men’s waistcoat and stripping it back to a skeletal framework, the piece becomes a subversion of the male physique - outlining the torso rather than covering or enhancing it.

The silver braid moves between tailoring, armour, jewellery and bone, creating a tension between strength and delicacy, protection and vulnerability, and the traditionally masculine and feminine. By reducing the male form to its simplest structure, the vest comments on the expectations placed on our bodies by society and the idea that a body has to look a certain way to be considered powerful, strong or desirable.

Worn directly against the body, it becomes a second skin and a celebration of the body in its most fundamental form. It suggests that power isn’t determined by size, muscle, shape or conventional ideas of masculinity - our bodies hold power simply because they are ours.

For me, the piece is about subverting and reclaiming masculinity through a queer lens. It doesn’t reject masculinity, but takes its familiar codes apart and rebuilds them into something more fluid, personal and expressive.
